UGM Students Find Bird Flu Vaccine

Yogyakarta  - Students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Gadjah Mada University Artina Prastiwi finds bird flu or avian influenza H5N1 by utilizing the gods crown fruit extract (Phaleria macrocarpa).

"The vaccine was shown to inhibit virus growth Avian Influenza (AI) to 87 percent. Also have been tested in laboratory scale, the vaccine has also cheaper than chemical vaccines sold in the market," said Artina in Yogyakarta, on Thursday.

According to him, AI vaccine on the market are usually priced Rp200.000 per 100 doses, whereas only vaccine discovery Rp75.000 per 100 doses.

"Although somewhat effective and inexpensive vaccine has not been marketed in bulk, because it still needs further research to know for certain the outcome," he said.

He said the vaccine was used the fruit crown of god, local potential of Indonesia, which has been scientifically proven to increase endurance as antivirus AI.

The content of saponins in the fruit crown gods useful addition to boost the immune system and vitality, can also be used as an antibacterial and antiviral.

According to him, to get the compound saponin, fruit extract gods crown made through distillation. How to make antivirus an extract from the crown of the god was preceded by weighting according to the dosage required.

"For a dose of 10 milliliters needed dried fruit gods crown as much as 100 grams per 100 milliliters of water, or the multiplication of 100 grams per 1,000 milliliters. Next, do refining to get the extract," he said.

After obtaining the extract, was examined levels of saponin in the Integrated Research and Testing Laboratory (LPPT) GMU. Extracts crown god must contain saponin content of 10 percent.

"The results obtained by saponin was used as a raw material that is solvent suspense AI virus antigen. Then that is used as the vaccine is 0.2 milliliters extract gods crown," he said.

He said in the first trial conducted at 30 embryonated chicken eggs. From the test results are known egg AI virus and given an additional 10 percent of saponin extract of the fruit crown the god of 0.2 ml, after incubation for 35 days found no dead embryos, healthy, and without scarring.

However, eggs injected with the higher dose 15 percent and 20 percent, turned out all the embryos die with a form of bleeding throughout the body, dwarfism, and alantois turbid fluid.

According to him, ten percent is the best result to prevent the bird flu virus. It was proved that the saponin concentration used should be appropriate because it can cause poisoning if given in large doses.

"Once proven safe in the eggs, testing this vaccine in chickens aged less than 21 days, and the results are quite encouraging. vaccinated chickens that had none of the dead," he said.

The results will be presented at an international seminar held in Japan Amstecs at 19 to 20 March 2011.
